What are lookup meetups?

lookup meetups evolved from an unintentioned event. When lookup's founder, Steven, took his telescope to a street corner to view an object he couldn't see from his own backyard, he found himself at the head of a line that had formed to look through the scope. After a long night of sharing the views, Steven realized that he had hit on a rewarding way to share his interest in astronomy and science with neighbors and strangers, young and old. Initially a very informal affair, the lookup meetups have matured into multi-scope sessions with pre-planned viewing subjects, illustrated handouts, and a base of regular attendees. meetups are a wonderful way to meet interesting people, to informally discuss subjects ranging from simple to complex, and to expose oneself to the wonders of our universe in an informal, social setting.

When do meetups happen?
meetups are held frequently, but not on a set schedule. Typically, they are held a few times a week. Most are very easy to get to; they are held on the streets of the five boroughs of NYC, in locations easy to reach by public transport. Sometimes, the sites are a bit more remote, so that fainter objects can be observed. Typically, topics at these gatherings become a bit more complex, as well. Often, events are planned or postponed somewhat last-minute, due to inclement weather, equipment transport, and similar logistical factors. The impromptu nature of the meetups lends an unintended, but authentic urban vibe. If you have nothing planned after work or school, come over and join us.
